Rochester Taking Part in Class Time Expansion

Rochester, N.Y. (AP) - About 4,000 students in Rochester will be spending a lot more time in the classroom beginning with the next school year as part of a pilot program intended to improve learning.

The district is among those in five states participating in an effort announced Monday by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Participating schools will add at least 300 hours of instruction and enrichment during the year. The other states participating are Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Tennessee.

The three-year program will be paid for through federal, state and district funds, along with funding from the Ford Foundation and National Center on Time and Learning.

Rochester Superintendent Bolgen Vargas says he's just beginning to build community support. All of the test districts must spend the next year on planning.

Longer days would help, if the people doing the Teaching are qualified and motivated. Nothing comes easy. And today's Teachers have to be diligent, have to give more. You are never going to get to all students, if you do not have a motivated teacher, how do you get motivated students.
