County Budget Amendments Concern Poloncarz

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Time is ticking on an Erie County budget for 2013. The county executive says a budget amendment proposed by the legislature's minority caucus will cut the amount of his proposed tax increase, but it's not being done the right way.

"What unfortunately, six members of the legislature have proposed something that looks good on paper but puts us out of balance even more. That could force us to take drastic measures, including possibly having the conrol board have a hard stance again," warns Mark Poloncarz.

Minority caucus member Joseph Lorigo says the proposals were the same Poloncarz suggested--last year when he was county comptroller. Those cuts included overtime to the sheriff's and buildings and grounds departments and to risk retention, which pays settlements or judgments against Erie County."For him to say our cuts don't make sense is a disservice to county taxpayers," says Lorigo.

The budget must be approved by Tuesday or Poloncarz's budget, complete with the tax increase, takes effect by default.
