Citigroup said Wednesday that it will cut 11,000 jobs, a bold early move by new CEO Michael Corbat. The cuts amount to about 4 percent of Citi's workforce of 262,000. The bulk of the cuts, about 6,200, will come from Citi's consumer banking unit, which handles everyday functions like branches and checking accounts. The bank employs approx. 1,300 in a customer service facility in Amherst, at the CrossPointe office park.
HSBC Bank USA says it will vacate Buffalo's tallest office building next year and relocate about 2,000 employees to other offices. The move will leave the 38-floor HSBC tower without its anchor tenant and mostly empty. HSBC says it's occupied the tower for 40 years and currently fills 653,000 of its 842,000 square feet.
The building is owned by Seneca One Realty LLC. A Seneca One spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday on the building's future. HSBC spokesman Neil Brazil says all of the employees now working in the tower will move to the HSBC Atrium building downtown near First Niagara Center, and to their leased space on Dick Road in Depew by the time the tower lease expires in October 2013.
