Paying More for Gas in Buffalo Than in Rest of NYS

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Take a trip out of town, and chances are you're paying less to fill up. You don't even have to leave the state to learn that either.

Buffalo averages $3.77 a gallon, while Rochester is at $3.73 a gallon, Syracuse averages $3.64, while Albany is at $3.66 according to gasbuddy.com. So, why are we paying more?

UB Professor Emeritus Larry Southwick puts it simply: transportation costs for gasoline go up the further west you go. "The further east you go, the closer you are to the refineries which are in New Jersey," explains Southwick. "I don't expect it to make a lot of difference, but a few cents will do that." In Albany's case, the gas could be shipped, making the cost less, adds Southwick.

Southwick adds there are other factors that come into play. "Within the Buffalo region, there are differences in taxes by community, depending on property values and wage rates," notes Southwick.

Gas Prices
I just returned from down south. Gas was $2.91 in South Carolina and $3.20 in Georgia. It didn't hit $3.80 until I came over the NY border. It's not a coincidence that the welcome you receive to New York State is a tollbooth. Utterly embarassing...

Gas $3.03 per gallon
I'm working in Alabama, Birmingham. Last map I looked at made AL look quite a bit farther from NJ than Bflo. $3.03 was lowest I saw - $3.08 $3.09 is average. Also much healthier economicly much to my suprise.
