Buffalo Schools' Crisis team is ready to help, if needed

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The Buffalo Schools Crisis Team was on call the entire weekend -- and is prepared to help students or faculty in dealing with the Connecticut school shooting.

The district has a Crisis Team with social workers and psychologists to help serve the needs of students and provide information for adults -- like how to answer questions students might have about the incident, says Wil Karestis, the assistant superintendent of the Buffalo Schools.

"One of the purposes of the crisis team is to provide that kind of information, so principals, for example, will have crisis team members sit with faculty, attend faculty meetings, and talk about some of those issues," Karestis said.

Karestis says school officials have dealt with this issue more than once -- since 1999.

"For those of us who were school officials during Columbine, we're brought right back to that terrible time," he said.

Karestis says the district has high expectations that teachers will use their skills to answer student questions in an age-appropriate way.
