Amy from Cheektowaga says she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 10 years ago when she was 24. But she had been dealing with the depression and anxiety and taking medication since childhood, and says it was difficult.
"I wouldn't wish this on anybody," she said during her phone conversation with WBEN's Tom Bauerle on Tuesday morning.
Amy also advised parents to get help for their children if they see signs that something is wrong. For those who are dealing with bipolar disorder, Amy also recommends seeing both a psychiatrist for the medication -- and a psychologist, who she says did wonders for her.
"... got me out in the open, meeting new people. I met my husband. I have a beautiful son, and if I hadn't done all these things, I would still be in my room, hiding from the world.
Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, is a disorienting condition that causes extreme shifts in mood, according to the website WedMD. In any given year, bipolar disorder affects more than 2 percent of American adults.
