Cuomo During Lease Talks Boosts Eventual Downtown Stadium

(WBEN) The new lease deal for Ralph Wilson Stadium lays the ground work for eventually deciding what could replace the Ralph-- and where that would go. And officials involved in the lease deal say Governor Cuomo is on board with putting that stadium-- eventually-- within city limits.

Rich Tobe, the Deputy Erie County Executive who  helped negotiate the lease deal says Cuomo's preference is to have a replacement within city limits.

Tobe, appearing Sunday on WBEN's Hardline program, said that eventually a study committee will begin eyeing possible sites.

The lease deal includes the option of setting aside funds for Ralph Wilson Stadium  and using them instead for site study and development of a new stadium in approximately ten years.

Tobe says once the lease deal is approved by the NFL and the Erie County legislature, they will assemble a site review committee to look at possibilities. Tobe says the early very preliminary talks have started to eyeball sites near the downtown core.

He adds that her cities have done best with sites that take advantage of existing surface lots and ramps- and he is not a fan of the outer harbor as a possibility, saying there are just too few roads in and out of that site.
