Ken Whisenhunt has been interviewed in Arizona by Bills President and CEO Russ Brandon, GM Buddy Nix, and Assistant GM Doug Whaley. The interview took place New Year's Day.
One day earlier, Whisenhunt was fired by the Arizona Cardinals after six seasons, leading the club to the 2008 NFC Championship.
“We go way back. We won some Super Bowls together so I have high regard for his coaching acumen,” Whaley told buffalobills.com. “Personally I know him and we’ll see what happens. I know he’s got a lot of opportunities. We haven’t decided. We still have to figure out what we’re going to do, but I can provide some insight on how he performed when I was with him.”
“The percentages of being successful is hiring a guy that's done it,” said Nix. “But we're not going to limit that. We'll be open. Might be a college guy, might be a coordinator. We're just going to try and make sure we get the best guy.”
Speaking Wednesday on sister-station WGR Sportsradio 550, Dave Burns, sports talk host with KTAR in Phoenix said Whisenhunt did something that previously thought to be unimaginable, unattainable -- taking the Cardinals to the Super Bowl, a game they eventually lost to the Steelers.
"He's a very intelligent man, and, certainly, when given the right parts, he's a very good head coach. It's just a question of whether you want him picking who those parts are because it seems like that's where he ran afoul over the last few years," Burns said.
The team is also set to interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton.
Horton told reporters in Arizona on Wednesday that he will meet with Bills officials later in the day. Horton is a Cardinals' head-coaching candidate to Whisenhunt, who was fired Monday.
A person familiar with Mike McCoy's schedule said the Broncos offensive coordinator is set to interview with the Bills in Denver this weekend. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills have not revealed their list of candidates.
