January Thaw Upon Us

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Right in the midst of winter, there always seem to be a time in Western New York when we get teased about the possibliity of spring. Then you look at the calendar and find it's the middle of January. As nice as it is, it's only the January thaw.

"The jet stream is going to move to the north into Southern Canada. A large high pressure will move of the coast, and that will bring some warm air from the Gulf of Mexico." says National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim MItchell. "There will be some rain coming with it."

With rain, plus melting snowpack, some may worry about flooding. Mitchell says not to worry. "There's not going to be a quick meltdown. Temperatures will creep up to 50 by Saturday," says Mitchell. "Right now it doesn't appear to be a heavy rain event."

But Mitchell says come next week, it's back to reality as a cold front will come our way and temperatures could dip below normal.
