(WBEN/CBS) Passengers aboard a dolphin and whale watching boat caught a glimpse of a rare phenomenon known as a "dolphin stampede" this past Sunday.
About 1,000 dolphins leaped into the air off the coast of Dana Point California- reaching speeds of approx. 25 MPH.
The rare footage, which includes underwater looks, was captured Sunday by Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari off Dana Point with the dolphins stampeding "like a herd of wild horses."
"This has happened twice recently though it is very rare," Capt. David Anderson wrote in the description, accompanying the video on YouTube.
"The line of wild dolphins could be seen from miles away churning up the water and, to the delight of whale watching passengers, the dolphins turned and stampeded directly over to the boat."
A similar stampede was caught on tape in February 2012.
Dolphin herds at Dana Point can sometimes number in the thousands. The spot - midway between Laguna Beach and San Clemente- has the world's greatest density of dolphins per square mile, but sudden stampedes are rare.
