Local Soldiers Honored

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Dozens of members of a Buffalo-based Army National Guard unit are marking their recent return from deployment in Afghanistan.

A "Freedom Salute" awards ceremony is being held Sunday morning for about 50 members of the National Guard's Company C, 427th Brigade Support Battalion at the Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo.

The soldiers in Company C mobilized a year ago this month as part of a call-up of more than 1,800 Soldiers from the Syracuse-based 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The unit headed to Afghanistan in April and supported medical coverage at Kandahar Airfield and the surrounding area.

On Saturday, Freedom Salute ceremonies were held at several upstate locations for some 450 soldiers who deployed to Afghanistan last year as part of the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry's combat operations.
