Jacobs says he received a request from The News for "all active pistol permit holders in Erie County, including but not limited to name and address."
Here's Jacobs's statement released Wednesday afternoon, near 4 pm.
Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs stated he will not provide to the Buffalo News the records of over 75,000 pistol permit holders in Erie County. Late last week Jacobs received a request from the Buffalo News for “all active pistol permit holders in Erie County, including but not limited to name and address.”
The Freedom of Information request came soon after a downstate paper obtained and published, in the form of an interactive Google map, all pistol permit holders in Rockland and Westchester Counties.
“I will exhaust every legal avenue available to keep the records of registered gun owners private, because I believe such disclosure could endanger the life and safety of our citizens,” said Jacobs. “As an elected official, that will always be my first priority.”
The Buffalo News has said that they have no intention of creating such a map but desire the data for other purpose. “This recent statement by the News does not change my position on the matter,” added Jacobs.
