The Authority is sending the teams at the request of the Department of Homeland Security, said George Gast, chief of the NFTA Transit Police Department.
"...to provide security within the transportation system for the presidential inauguration," Gast said.
Both teams -- an officer and their K-9s -- are certified through the Transportation Security Administration, the TSA.
Their selection follows an evaluation of its NFTA's K-9 program. Officer Robert Bove is there with his K-9 Cora.
"We're going to be working with the Transit police in Washington during the inauguration, and I believe we'll be doing some training with them down there," Bove said.
Officer David Capretto and his K-9 Gino have also made the trip.
NFTA Transit Police chief George Gast says the authority will be reimbursed for any costs incurred.
This is the second time the NFTA has sent a K-9 team to Washington for security during a presidential inauguration.
