An ammunition shortage? What's causing it?



Undated (WBEN) -- Those looking to buy gun ammunition these days are finding what they're looking for -- might not be available.

There could be a couple reasons behind this shortage of ammunition, says Budd Schroeder, chairman of the board for the group SCOPE (Shooters Committee on Political Education).


He says rumors of a buying spree involving government agenies, such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2012 may have had something to do with it.

"They bought over a billion rounds of ammunition ... the goverment agencies ... that kind of tightened it up a little bit," Schroeder says.

Schroeder also says the potential for background checks to buy bullets is also causing a run on the product.

"Now one of the rumors is that they're going to make it necessary to get that background check if you're just going to buy ammunition," Schroeder says.

The background checks are known as NICS -- National Instant Criminal Background Check System -- something used for those looking to buy guns.
