Scientist: temp swing not unusual, but high temp was



Ithaca (WBEN) -- In the mixed bag that is Buffalo weather, the temperature reached a new record high on Wednesday before returning to regular mid-winter conditions.

A scientist at Cornell University says a big temperature swing isn't that unusual, but the reading from which it started was a bit unusual.

Western New York had a taste of spring for a few hours on Wednesday, complete with gusty winds and rain drops.  And some peopke, including a man who was walking along Main Street in downtown Buffalo near the hospital, didn't seem to have a problem with it.

"It's very strange. It's very very strange. With global warming and stuff, it's too strange," he said.

At the same time, Art DeGaetano, director of the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, says the actual weather pattern isn't that unusual, but that record high temperature did stand out.

"You know a swing of about 35 degrees isn't all that uncommon in winter in upstate New York. What makes this storm really uncommon is just how warm it is out in front of the storm," he says.

The area dealt with temperatures in the 60s on Wednesday before they dropped back to the upper 20s on Wednesday night into this morning.
