Buffalo Police Officer Patty Parete dies

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The Buffalo Police Department is confirming the death of police officer Patty Parete.  She died at her home early Saturday morning at the age of 48.

Word of Parete's death was also announced on the website of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association.

"We woke up this morning to very sad news. Patricia Parete was a brave and courageous officer. We have suffered a tremendous loss, not only this department, but out city and community as well," Police commissioner Daniel Derenda said in a statement.

The reaction from Mayor Byron Brown was one of "just total sadness," saying his thoughts, prayers, and wishes are with the Parete family at this time.

Officer Parete and her partner, Officer Carl Androlina, were injured when a gunmen shot them back in December 2006.  The officers were responding to a fight call at a downtown mini-mart.

Parete suffered a spinal injury as a result of that shooting.

The website says "Patty had a long, arduous, and brave challenge from a spinal injury as a result of her injuries."

Funeral arrangements haven't been finalized at this time, police say.
