Handgun Permit Holders Can Keep Information Private

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) While there is a lot of contention over the newly passed New York State SAFE Act, there is one element of the law that both sides are agreeing on. The noted provision allows pistol permit holders in New York to have their personal information kept confidential.

The provision was included in the new law after a newspaper in Westchester County posted the names of all permit holders on a Google Map after obtaining the information via a Freedom of Information Act filing. This portion of the law would shield such information from the public.

Erie County Clerk, Christopher Jacobs says his offices have been inundated with calls from permit and non permit holders asking about the provision, "...whether you're for or against gun control, on this issue, I think there's a broad-based support that people should have the right to keep this private if they so desire."

Jacobs says that forms should be in the County Clerk offices by mid-February but interested parties can order an electronic version of the request form at www.erie.gov/optout. The form will be emailed to the requestor as soon as the New York State Police issue them.
