St. Luke's offering free flu shots on Saturday

Buffalo (WBEN) -- A local organization is responding to the concern following the death of a young child from the flu on Monday.

St. Luke's Mission of Mercy at 325 Walden Avenue is working with the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) to offer a free community flu-shot clinic on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the dining room at St. Luke's.

The VNA is normally able to give shots to those aged 9 and up, but has received special permission to administer influenza shots for children ages 5 and up, says David Marciniak, director of Our Lady of Good Remedy Health Services, the mission's health-and-wellness arm.

All adults are welcome to come as well, he adds.

"Everyone is welcome, regardless of having insurance or even if they don't have I.D., we're more than happy to serve anyone in the community who wants to come out and get an influenza shot," he says.

Nursing volunteers will also provide other screening services during the clinic, Marciniak adds.

The clinic is in response to the six-year-old girl, a student at St. Amelia's school, who died from the flu on Monday.  It's the first pediatric death from the flu reported in Erie County this season.
