Erie County lawmakers to consider resolution opposing state gun-control law

The Legislature's Republican-led minority coalition submitted the resolution, and legislator Kevin Hardwick thinks there's a decent chance the bill could pass the legislature next Thursday, considering they only need one Democrat to support the measure.

Even if people think the law contains good provisions, Hardwick says they should consider how quickly state lawmakers approved that law.

"It was rammed through the [state] legislature [in just] 24 hours. The three-day waiting period, or the aging period that's in the constitution was waived because the governor ... said that this is something vital, it's got to happen today," Hardwick says.

Cuomo has said he used the measure to avoid an "unprecedented" rush to buy assault weapons if he waited three days for a legislative vote..

Democrat Betty Jean Grant, who chairs the Erie County Legislature, says she's not sure at this point how her colleagues feel about the measure thebeing put forth by the minority.

"I can't speak for them because I just got a copy today myself, and I have not digested, have not read it, but I know that it should be sent to committee, and that could happen as quickly as next Thursday," Grant says.

She also wonders if the legislature shouldn't wait to see what changes the state makes to the original law, something state lawmakers have said they plan to do.

The  minority resolution, as it is now, would support the repeal and revision of NYSAFE, the 2013 New York gun-control law.
