Erie County Pistol Permit Opt-Out Forms Arrive

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs says the much anticipated opt-out forms for pistol permit holders have arrived.

"This is the one page form that was given to us by the State Police, and the opt-out form allows pistol permit owners to make sure their information is always private," says Jacobs.

Permit holders can go to www.erie.gov/optout to print out a copy of the form, fill-it out and mail it or fax it in to the Erie County Clerk.  Alternatively all County Auto Bureaus will have copies of the forms available as of Tuesday, February 19th, as well as the Pistol Permit Office located at 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo, NY 14202.

“The ‘opt-out’ is a simple one page form that allows you to choose one of four reasons you desire to keep your information private. Once the permit holder completes the form simply mail it or fax it into our office,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs stated that he believes the most common option for permit holders will be option number #4 which states, “I have reason to believe that I may be subject to unwarranted harassment upon disclosure.”

The law provides 60-days for permit holders to exercise this “opt-out” provision before someone can make a request for pistol records. “So we are encouraging pistol permit holders who want assurance that their records will be kept private to complete the form immediately,” said Jacobs.

opt out for pistol permit holders
Is this opt out only available for residents of Erie County, and if so why. If this is coming from the state sheriff's office, then shouldn't all the counties in NY be eligible?

opt out provision
Will this opt out provision be available to all the counties in NY? I see that it was handed out by the state police, so why is this being limited to Erie county?

about buffalo eveing news putting names and address in paper "fire arms"
Think about this....... what you are doing by putting our names in the paper is telling the DRUG DEALERS, BAD PEOPLE, AND WHO EVER WANTS A GUN, just go to the address in the paper and take 1. Now when this starts happening, do we shoot them or just give them the guns we have in our home, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR BEING SO STUPID AND PUTTING MY FAMILY'S LIFE IN DANGER, HIP HIP HURRAY WHAT A FREE COUNTRY

Not sure
I dont really trust this opt-out plan. Is it just the governments way of tracking people who have changed adresses? anyone can go downtown and check the pistol permit files. Everyone with a permit is registered and open to anyone who wants to look.
