BUFFALO, NY (WBEN) -A weekend squirrel-shooting contest planned in Holly, New York is drawing criticism. State Sen. Tony Avella, of Queens, and animal-rights activists are among those urging the Holley Fire Department to call off its annual "Squirrel Slam" fundraiser, scheduled for today.
The event has gone viral, and the social media campaign to stop the event which allows participants to hunt squirrels and win cash awards based of the total weight of their catch, has turned into full-fledged cultural warfare. Passions are running so high that the FBI had to be called in to investigate death threats against “the village board, the police, and firefighters involved with the event.
