Two Deputies Attacked Inside Holding Center

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Erie County Sheriff's Office says two inmates at the holding center attacked deputies in separate incidents.

The first happened last night around 11pm, when deputies say 21 year old Lakita Hawkins was not getting along with other inmates and was causing problems. She was subsequently reassigned to another housing unit to avoid any further incidents. Two Deputies were in the process of escorting Inmate Hawkins to her new housing unit when she suddenly dropped her property and attacked one of the Deputies from behind, pummeling that Deputy about the head, face and upper back. The other escort Deputy attempted to stop Inmate Hawkins’ attack but could not control her. An "officer down" emergency call was sent out and additional Deputies responded to the unit. Inmate Hawkins was finally able to be restrained. She was checked out at the medical infirmary and was not injured.

Both Deputies were transported to the Erie County Medical Center with head, neck and back injuries. They were treated and released from the hospital but remain off duty due to their injuries. The names of these deputies will not be released for security and safety reasons.

Inmate Hawkins was charged with Assault in the 2nd Degree (Class D Felony) and harassment. She is scheduled to be arraigned in Buffalo City Court.

The second happened Friday morning, when deputies say 20 year old inmate Devan Hunley was being escorted back to his housing unit when he pushed a Deputy from behind that was in the process of unlocking a secondary fire door. The push caused the Deputy’s head and face to slam into the metal fire door. The Deputy activated his emergency body alarm and additional Deputies immediately responded to his aid. Inmate Hunley engaged and fought with the responding deputies. He was subsequently restrained after a brief struggle. Inmate Hunley was not injured during this incident.

Two Deputies involved in this incident were transported to ECMC with head, leg and hand injuries. They are currently being treated and the extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
