Lockport, NY (WBEN) -- 178 firearms were turned in during a gun buyback event in Lockport's Municipal Building Saturday.
During the 5-hour event, police purchased 117 handguns and 61 long guns. The firearms will be destroyed to keep them from being used illegally.
The buyback was sponsored by the Lockport Police Department, in association with the Drug Enforcement Agency's Buffalo office.
The money to pay for the guns ($11,265) was provided by funds seized from drug dealers. The amounts ranged from $10 for a non-working gun, up to $100 for an assault rifle.
Police also collected about 5,000 rounds of ammunition and 76 pounds of prescription drugs.
