'Draft Day' Dreams Dashed

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) If you hoped to see Kevin Costner in Western New York anytime soon, your field of dreams has been dashed. Production of the movie "Draft Day" will be filmed in Cleveland instead.

Buffalo Niagara Film Commission head Tim Clark says it simply came down to costs. "Cleveland seemed to be offering better incentives and consequently the movie company chose to film the movie in Cleveland instead of Buffalo," says Clark, who is unsure how much more incentives producers received. To rub Astroplay into the wounds, Costner's character will play the GM of the Cleveland Browns, rather than the Bills.

Clark says Ivan Reitman seemed to really want the film to be made here in Buffalo. "Mr. Reitman toured the Bills facility a couple of weeks ago. The Buffalo Bills were so very accommodating. When he toured the area, he got a good feel for the community, and I have a good feeling he wanted to film it here," explains Clark.

Clark believes incentives need to be about 45 percent higher than they are in New York City to make it worthwhile for producers to come film in Buffalo. He adds it needs to be done on a sliding scale, like in Ontario because it costs more to film here.
