Are you ready for the weekend? This one may leave you green around the gills, especially since St. Patrick’s Day falls on Sunday.
Here are a few nibbles to get you in the Shamrock and Shenanigan mood:
Here are a few nibbles to get you in the Shamrock and Shenanigan mood:
• St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in the U.S., starting in Boston, Mass. in 1737. Approximately 34 million modern Americans claim Irish ancestry.
• Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick's Day dish. In 2009, roughly 26.1 billion pounds of beef and 2.3 billion pounds of cabbage were produced in the U.S.
• Irish Soda Bread gets its name and distinctive character from the use of baking soda rather than yeast as a leavening agent.
• Wearing green, eating green food, and even downing green beer, is said to commemorate St. Patrick's use of the shamrock - although blue was the original color of his vestments.
• Typically about 600,000 pints of Guinness are sold on any given day. On St. Patrick’s Day, that number jumps to around 3.5 million.
• All corned beef starts with beef brisket, rump or round, which is typically cheaper than other cuts of beef or pork. To get to the corned beef stage, the brisket is soaked in a salt brine for anywhere from three to 10 days. Salt helps break down tough muscle. Somewhere along its path to America, possibly starting on the East Coast with Irish immigrants and Jewish butchers, those budget cuts of meat gave way to tradition.
My favorite Irish food and drink are a little different. I love Irish Soda Bread, especially if it’s warmed or toasted. It’s so tasty that I don’t even bother to butter it. My favorite Iris drink is a “Pickleback”, a shot of Jameson whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice.
I had my first Pickleback at Shenannigan’s on Niagara Falls Blvd. near Sheridan.
And tradition is important at this Irish Pub & Eatery. This Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. and running through 4 a.m., Shenannigan’s is hosting a huge tent party on their property. “Strictly Hip will play at 6 Saturday evening; free parking at the back of the building.
Shenannigan’s is owned by a native of Ireland, so expect a real wearin’ of the green and lots of partying.
