UB Peregrine Falcon Moved

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) For the last few years, those who dared tread near MacKay Hall on the UB South campus were met with a swooping peregrine falcon protecting her nest. The DEC says the time has come to make a move.

"It's completely normal when someone is on the roof for the falcon to confront him, so we have protections for workers on the roof, but you can't do that for people walking on the ground," says Mark Kandel with the DEC. "Her behavior was so aggressive so early, it was time to put human safety before the nest."

Kandel says some people were injured after the female falcon attacked them within yards of the nest. Now the falcon is being moved to a facility in Niagara County, where the falcon will "be able to exercise her wings."

The nest has opened up for a new falcon couple. But what is the likelihood of another swooping bird along Bailey Avenue? "That would be unprecedented," says Kandel. "It was an extreme behavior by the falcon (being moved)."
