Mayor Byron Brown is expected to announce his candidacy for re-election later this year, and Bernard Tolbert, the former Special Agent in Charge of Buffalo's FBI continues to reach out to fundraisers, while remaining coy about a possible challenge to Brown. Sergio Rodriguez is the only announced candidate in the race, running as the first Republican to do so in many years.
Which got us thinking: Who is Buffalo's favorite mayor in the past 50 years? The list includes more than one local basketball star- and two amateur boxers.

50 years ago, Chester Kowal was the city's mayor, the last Republican to hold the seat.
A former City Comptroller, he spent his early years playing minor league basketball, and was a good enough boxer to almost qualify for the Olympic team.
Frank Sedita served his second term after Kowal, his first just before him. Sedita was elected to three terms as Mayor between 1958 and 1973.
He's the grandfather of the current District Attorney and the father of the State Supreme Court judge. with the same name.
Stanley Makowski followed him in City Hall.. and was mayor as the Convention Center and Marine Midland tower were built.
He was also mayor during the Blizzard of 77.
It was during the Blizzard of 1985 that the next Mayor, James D Griffin, famously told Buffalonians to grab a six pack and stay inside.
Griffin served 4 terms between 1978 and 1993...
Tony Masiello was a Canisius Basketball star and was elected to the Common Council as a 23 year old and served in the State Senate for more than 2 decades before serving 2 terms as mayor.
Byron Brown was state senator in the same district Masiello served, and followed him at City Hall: It's assumed that Mayor Brown will seek a third term as Mayor this fall.
