Want to Work For Erie County? Live There, Says Lorigo

(WBEN)  Legislator Joseph Lorigo (I- West Seneca) has unveiled legislation that would mandate that new Erie County workers live in Erie County.

“Taxpayers who fund employee salaries deserve a workforce that has a personal interest in the success of this county. That personal interest is derived and maintained by the fact that our employees live here and rely on the same services they are tasked with providing,” said Lorigo, in a prepared statement.

The measure would not apply to those who have been hired before the measure goes into effect, nor to anyone who is laid-off involuntarily.  The proposed law also excludes employees of Erie County Medical Center or Erie Community College.

The measure, proposed Tuesday, also  includes an exception to allow the county to hire someone from outside the county, with legislature approval, as long as the person re-locates within 6 months.

If an employees is found to be working for the county, but living outside it, "The Commissioner of Personell shall inform the legislature of the violation and the date of the impending termination," according to Lorigo's proposal .

A person fired under the provision would not be eligible to be re-hired for five years, the Lorigo proposal says.
