Deputies responded to a home on Cochran Avenue in Springville around 8pm Tuesday for an unresponsive baby. Deputies Ben Pisa; Jason Bouton and Don Hoelscher immediately arrived on the scene and found an unresponsive baby in a bedroom. The trio performed CPR before paramedics arrived; the baby was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the baby died of blunt force trauma.
Dylan Schumaker, 16, and the victim’s mother had been living in the home for approximately two weeks. According to the defendant, he and the victim’s mother had been dating on and off for the past three years. The victim’s 19 year old mother was away at work while the suspect babysat her child.
Schumaker is not the child's father. He'll be arraigned on second degree murder charges in Springville Village Court .. The victim, Austin Smith, would have turned two on Satuday.
