Amherst, NY (WBEN) UB Police have charged a student with arson, reckless endangerment and other charges after Thursday's fire in a dorm.
19 year old Alex Seidenberg was arrested after University Police say he used a butane torch while using marijuana while inside Spaulding Quad Building 1. Police believe Seidenberg dropped the torch while smoking, causing the blaze. Smoking is banned in university dorms, and Seidenberg is also charged with marijuana possession and criminal mischief.
Seidenberg is expected to be released from ECMC today; his girlfriend was treated and released last night. They were the only two injuries in the fire, which broke out around 6:15pm.
Residents of Spaulding Quad were evacuated and kept out of the building until 9:30. 19 residents of the fourth floor were temporarily displaced. UB says Campus Living staff is working with students to provide the best housing possible for the rest of the semester.
