How School Performance Can Influence Home Sales

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) As a family grows and seeks a home, one factor seems to creep in among price, vicinity to work and play, and neighborhood: school district performance.

"As a parent and father of three children, we've gone through the process ourselves," says Louis Vinci, president of the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors. "Traditionally, it's been Williamsville, Orchard Park, and Clarence going back and forth in the top three" when it comes to school district performance. "Parents feel it's very important to get their children in the best school system their money can buy."

Vinci notes a home in the Clarence or Williamsville district, homes range from $200,000 to $300,000. But there's one other expense to think about. "A lot of times they come with a high tax that comes with the home to compensate that," notes Vinci.

Vinci notes even lower performing districts like Buffalo are doing well. "People are searching in the Buffalo school system, throughout the Delaware district and certain pockets, you can't sell them fast enough," observes Vinci.
Even lower performing districts see homes sold. "There's always a buyer for every home, but not as fast as where people want to be," Vinci says.
