34 year old Candace Cartagena has been arraigned on a second degree murder charge in connection with the death of her daughter Bianca. Bianca Cartegena was found dead of asphyxiation in 2010.
DA Frank Sedita says, "Every case and every investigation is different. It is more important to mak sure the investigation is truly completed and to get the case right rather than to prematurely present it to the grand jury."
Cartagena is also charged with offering a false instrument, for falsely claiming the existence of children, who were not her own, as dependents on her 2010 state tax return.
Candace Cartegena faces up to 25 years to life if convicted of murder, and an additional 4 years in jail if convicted for the alleged tax scam.
