EMS Week in Erie County; Crews Prepare for Disasters
Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) This is the week first responders receive recogniion for their work, whether routine like first aid, or a disaster like the tornado in Oklahoma. It's EMS Week in Erie County.
Training never stops, according to Erie County Emergency Services Commissioner Dan Neaverth, Jr. "These are the people who will handle triage, search and rescue, it's a total package," says Neaverth. "It's about the training for the worst case scenario, hoping for the best."
Neaverth says EMS personnel prepare for all types of disasters. "It's constantly evolving. It's not just tornadoes, it could be a snowstorm where people are stuck in the cars, or even a lightning strike," notes Neaverth.
As for whether Erie County's crews will head to Oklahoma, Neaverth says it's based on a mutual aid system. "We wait until we're called, but if called we will be ready," notes Neaverth.
