Erie County Legislature Approves Residency Requirements

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) By a 6-5 vote, the Erie County Legislature has approved a law requiring future employees of the county to live in Erie County.

There was some debate on the floor during Thursday's session. "My Democratic colleagues were concerned the law would take away some powers from the county executive, which is not true," says Joe Lorigo, the bill's sponsor. He notes exceptions to the law include those who are already employed, and in the event a position cannot be filled by a qualified candidate who lives within the county.

Lorigo says lawmakers and other independently elected officials must live within Erie County, so it should be no different for employees "When employees of Erie County live in Erie County, they're more invested in the work they're doing," explains Lorigo.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz must sign the bill before it becomes law.
