Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A coalition of community and government leaders are urging those affected by illegal emissions by Tonawanda Coke to speak up as a judge determines the penalty against the company.
"This is about taking statements from the affected community, so the federal judge can determine the fines to assess against Tonawanda Coke," says Congressman Brian Higgins. "He'll make a decision about the amount of the fine and how it should be structured."
Higgins says any financial penalty should be kept in the affected areas. "There are communities where people are reporting there is a high incidence of cancer within neighborhoods that could have been caused by exposure to benzene and other cancer causing industrial waste," notes Higgins.
The deadline is July 1st, and anyone with a statement may send it through the US Attorney's office.
