City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Congressman Brian Higgins announced Thursday that an 11.3 Million Dollar makeover of Ohio Street is close to construction.
The project will add green space to a stretch of about two miles from Michigan Avenue to Fuhrmann Boulevard.
Mayor Brown said that the goal of the project is to "build the infrastructure so people can really enjoy the development that's come together at Canalside, the inner harbor, and the investments that are being made in the outer harbor.
"There's been a preoccupation in Buffalo about bridges," Congressman Higgins said. "(Ohio Street) has been sitting right in front of us, and this is the land bridge... that connects the more densely developed downtown Buffalo and Canalside with the outer harbor."
Higgins also said that green space will be important to the city.
"We're not trying to create a densely developed waterfront. We want to compliment the good city we have with an attractive waterfront. Think more Chicago and less Baltimore."
Construction work on the project is expected to begin this fall.
