Cabela's announced today plans to begin construction this fall on an 88,000 square foot store in Cheektowaga.
The store will occupy the former Wegman's on Walden Avenue across from the Walden Galleria Mall that currently sits vacant.
Cabela's Vice President of Construction and Real Estate Mark Nienhueser says that Cheektowaga is the perfect location for a new store.
"The Canadian business will be a benefit" said Neinhueser, "but the primary is to reach our Western New York customers. We can tell through our direct catalog and our Internet business that you have a great community that enjoys the outdoors."
"Inevitably, you will begin to compare Cabela's commitment to Buffalo and Western New York with our nine year pursuit of Bass Pro." Said Congressman Brian Higgins. "I asked the gentlemen from Cabela's what is the distinction between Cabela's and Bass Pro? And they simply responded 'We're better'"
The store will be Cabela's first in New York State, and is expected to bring about 200 jobs to the area.
