Within the past week, GEICO and Time Warner both touted the number of call center jobs they have added to the local community, but they are not the only players in the growing field. And while CitiBank in Amherst and JP Morgan Chase in Albion have announced plans to close their call center facilities, in the past year, the number of centers adding jobs have tipped the scales to make the industry a net job gainer for the region.
- UnitedHealth Group in Tonawanda, with 80 fresh jobs this year, and 275 in the past two years.
- Yahoo with plans to add approx. 100 new call center jobs at the second phase of their data center development in Lockport.
- Western Regional OTB with approx. 60 jobs added at their facility in Amherst this past year.
- In Silver Creek, the national call center for Tempur-Pedic beds recently received IDA incentives to preserve about 70 call center jobs as part of a factory expansion there.

The amount of priority it is given by local economic development officials is part of the picture. So is the critical mass. Real estate and workforce issues are also cited.
"You look at a place like Buffalo that has , a low cost of real estate relatively speaking, and the ability to set up these kind of operations, and I think that gives us good leverage nationally," says Cong. Brian Higgins.
With incentives from government, Time Warner this week announced it is adding approximately 100 jobs to a call center being set up at the former Sheehan Emergency Hospital downtown.
As it celebrated its 2,500 employee mark last week, GEICO s facility in the CrossPointe Business Park in Amherst noted that it accounts for about half of all Buffalo area jobs created in the past decade.
Both pointed to the workforce as the reason for growth:
"The workforce in Buffalo is a hard working, dedicated, skilled workforce," says Time-Warner's Regional Terrence Rafferty. Adds GEICO CEO Tony Nicely:" People here value a job, they want to work hard, they want to show up.
