Time to Break Out Your Elastic Pants!

Celebrating its 30th birthday, the annual feeding frenzy known as the Taste of Buffalo will be hosting “Fun by the Forkful” this weekend, July 13 & 14th.

If we trust the early reports, the weather gods will be smiling upon us with toasty temps and sunny skies both days.

The two-day culinary party is open to one and all. Admission is free but tickets must be purchased to enjoy the enormous smorgasbord of food, ranging from seafood, pizza, vegetarian items, barbecue, soul food, Asian cuisine, sweet treats and so much more.

As you schedule that extra Zumba class and pull out the elastic pants, chew on a few fun Taste facts:
  • The Taste of Buffalo is the largest two-day festival in the U.S, drawing nearly a half-million hungry folks. It runs along Delaware Ave. from Chippewa to Niagara Square. Saturday hours: 11am -9pm; Sunday: 11am – 7pm.
  • 51 restaurants, three food trucks, seven wineries will participate, including a culinary stage and special offerings from local and national sponsors. This year, 11 new eateries are participating in their first Taste!
  • More than 200 food items will be served up; no item is more than $4.

The Taste of Buffalo is still the only food festival in the country that requires all participating restaurants to offer a healthy menu item as part of the “Healthy Options” program. Those options are lower in fat, sodium and cholesterol.
  • A non-profit organization, the Taste has raised more than a quarter million dollars for local charities. More than 1,000 volunteers make the event a reality. Five scholarships, each $1,000, are awarded yearly to area high school seniors pursuing a culinary or hospitality type career.
Several local bands will take to the stage, including my favorite: the All Star Project, featuring Dick Bauerle, Don Tomasulo and Matt Young. Rock out with ASP Saturday at 6:20 in Niagara Square.

Do you map out a strategy before or when you arrive at the Taste or do you just “wing it”? What is the best thing you’ve ever eaten at the Taste of Buffalo?
