It will be a Marriott hotel in front of First Niagara Center.
That was the announcement today by HARBORcenter President John Koelmel at the arena downtown. Shaner Hotels will operate the Marriott Facility, which is expected to be finished in May of 2015.
The 19 Story hotel will have over 200 guest rooms along with meeting spaces and a fitness center. It will open about seven months after the ice rink and restaurant facilities in the HARBORcenter are expected to open doors in September 2014.
"It was a little over a year ago when the city selected Terry and Kim Pegula, and the Sabres organization to develop the Webster Block" said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. "I can tell you that every milestone that was identified in that process has been reached by the Sabres organization."
Buffalo Sabres' Chief Development Officer Cliff Benson said that he expects construction to remain on schedule, citing the over 80 workers on-site this week, that number will increase to over 100 beginning next week.
Koelmel says that he envisions the facility to be an attraction year-round. "It won't be NHL season dependent" Koelmel said. "We'll create programs and activities literally on a year-round basis."
"We're going to give new customers the opportunity to visit Buffalo and stay for a number of days" said Shaner Hotels President Plato Ghinos. "It's a great opportunity for new business to come in, business that right now is skipping Buffalo."
