CodeRED to Alert Buffalo Residents in Emergencies

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The City of Buffalo is prepared to alert residents of major emergency and non-emergency situations that could impact them. City officials are urging residents to sign up for CodeRED.

Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says the system can be key in emergencies. "A large fire, a chemical release, a snowstorm, anything that would impact people in any way the system can notify them," says Whitfield. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the program. "We can target the entire database, or we can target a certain street, only those who are directly impacted at the time."

Whitfield adds the system is also available for non-emergency situations such as street closures, but you must opt-in for that.

Whitfield is encouraging residents to not only give landlines, but cell phone and other contact numbers when they sign up for CodeRED.
