Buffalo Teachers Crying Over Spilt Milk?

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - The Buffalo Teachers Federation has filed a grievance against the Buffalo Public School District's “Breakfast in the Classroom” program, claiming serving breakfast in the classroom creates unsanitary conditions, and that teacher duties associated with breakfast in the classroom are beyond their contract provision.

Today, about 25 people from both the District Parent Coordinating Council and the Community Health Worker Network went to the Teacher's Federation offices to protest the teachers' grievance.

Jessica Bauer Walker is the Health Chairperson of the District Parent Coordinating Council, she says that the program has been a positive one. "With 82 percent of our children in the schools living in poverty, this is an opportunity for them to start off their day with a healthy and nutritious meal, and also come in to a classroom environment versus the cafeteria environment which is much more chaotic" Walker said. "They can have a calm start to their day, have a healthy meal, and really get the day off to a positive start."

Teachers Federation President Phil Rumore says that the program is indeed a positive one, and teachers are not trying to get rid of it, but rather make it run more smoothly.

"All that we're looking for right now," Rumore said, "what we want to do is at each school, sit down with the parents, teachers, administrators, and everybody and say what do we need to make this program work? For example, some schools have 30 aides, some schools have 10. Do we need more help? Do we need to get some parents to help volunteer in the morning?"

"The notion that some of the parent groups had to make a big stink about it and get it all wrong, that we were trying to get rid of the breakfast program; if people would, instead of protesting and walking up and down in front of the office, take the time to learn the issues it might be better for everybody."

What a Joke this Guy is.......
If Phil cared more about the students then the BREAKFAST program, we probably wouldn't be worried about a 60% drop in state testing grades..Boy cant believe you educated teachers allow this farce to lead your organization ..what a joke this guy is.....

Lazy Parents
I think this is a case of LAZY Parents , expecting the school system to feed their kids , & IF somehow this passes, I think the teacher should shut the heck up already , the more money you make doesn't seem to be making the kids ANY smarter.

why are the Buffalo public schools responsible for feeding somones child.
Rediculous. Parents! If you tink somone should be responsible for your children. Wake up! Grow up! teachers are paid to teach your children. Teachers are not your servants. Go to bed early! Wake up early and fix your child a healthy breakfast! Understood! Take responsibility!!!! What a concept!

Confidential to right wingers
If you're going to criticize the state of education, your poor spelling and grammar tends to undermine your premise.

Common sense
I would like to see teachers teaching, not serving as waiters and waitresses. Parents should be feeding their children breakfast. A box of Cheerios, gallon of milk, and a bunch of bananas will feed a child breakfast for an entire week for less than $10. This could be afforded by almost all parents(s) if it was a priority to them.
