Fire at Target Store in Amherst

Amherst, NY (WBEN) Amherst Police say the Target Store on Niagara Falls Boulevard was evacuated Thursday afternoon because of a back room fire.

A police lieutenant tells WBEN the sprinkler system has been activated, with the store "half-filled" with smoke. The fire is believed to have started in a back room at the store.

Jill, a shopper, called WBEN's Tom Bauerle and told him she alerted an associate about the fire. "I was in the store when they were evacuated, and there was a display of men's clothing on fire," says Jill. She says the evacuation was quick, with employees clearing out the store in a matter of two minutes.

"I couldn't really tell but it was contained to one display," noted Jill. "As I was looking back over my shoulder, everything from that back wall to probably the aisle that runs down the center of the store was completely filled with smoke."
