Poll: Under Half Give School Super Brown Passing Grade

(WBEN) The  Siena College poll of Buffalo area voters finds resistance to a possible takeover of Buffalo Public schools by state officials, even though 70 percent feel that Superintendent Pamela Brown is doing only a fair or poor job.

A majority of those surveyed -- 61 percent -- say School Board member  and former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino  will be effective in improving the quality of public schools in Buffalo, and almost half support giving the schools more money.

The poll, sponsored by the Buffalo News and WGRZ was released Sunday and surveyed 966 registered voters in Buffalo between Aug 11 and 13.

The poll also finds that while he's only been in office a month and a half, Paladino remains a polarizing figure with about as many who like him as who don't

"(He's) virtually evenly divided among the entire electorate," says Siena Pollster Steve Greenberg.

In addition to measuring attitudes about the Buffalo School System, the poll also says 61 percent of Buffalo's Democratic party primary voters would re-elect Mayor Byron Brown, compared to challenger Bernie Tolbert.

Here's the portions of the poll dealing with Buffalo Schools:
