Charge Under New NY Gun Law Dropped in Plea Deal

MOREAU, N.Y. (AP) - One of the first people charged under New York's new gun law has pleaded guilty to a different weapons offense after the prosecutor dismissed the NY SAFE Act charge.
Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy III says he used "prosecutorial discretion" in dismissing the SAFE Act charge against 51-year-old William Greene of Moreau. He says Greene pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon Thursday in Moreau Town Court.
Murphy says it was the same level of offense as the SAFE Act charge, but was based on law already in effect before the controversial new limits championed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo were passed last winter.
reene was sentenced to a conditional discharge and required to surrender the semi-automatic rifle that was seized in April.
