A teenager has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting another teen at a crowded park two years ago.
19-year-old Dontre Jones was given the maximum sentence Monday morning in Erie County Court, where he was convicted of manslaughter by a judge in a non-jury trial in June.
Jones was found guilty of killing 19-year-old Ira Watkins Jr. of Buffalo on May 31, 2011 in Cheektowaga Town Park while scores of children played nearby. Police say Watkins was shot in the chest when Jones fired into a crowd near the park's basketball courts.
Three teachers at Cheektowaga Central High School have been placed on administrative leave while district officials investigate calls Jones made to them while he was awaiting trial.
