Tall Ships Come To Canalside

Two tall ships based on actual 19th-century sailing vessels are among the highlights of the four-day Buffalo Maritime Festival.

The event kicks off late Thursday afternoon with the scheduled arrival of the Peacemaker and the Lynx at Canalside on the city's Lake Erie waterfront.

The Peacemaker (pictured R) was launched in 1989 after being built in Brazil using traditional methods and tropical hardwoods. It's modeled on the Cutty Sark, a British clipper ship that sailed during the post-Civil War era.

The Lynx  (above L)  is a schooner based in Newport Beach, Calif., that was modeled after an American ship captured by the British during the War of 1812.

Tours of the ship will be offered.

The festival also includes rowboat rentals, a beer garden, live music, fireworks and a screening of "The Pirates of the Caribbean."
