ChargePoint, Tops Open Electric Vehicle Charging Station
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) In a public-private partnership between ChargePoint and NYSERDA, a new two car electric vehicle charging station has opened at Tops in Williamsville.
The $1 million public/private partnership between ChargePoint and NYSERDA provides more than 80 EV charging stations throughout New York State. Of those stations, 67 will be located in National Grid’s service area in upstate New York. About 15 charging stations are expected to be installed in western New York by the end of September, with another 5 proposed for the region to be installed later this year.
New York has one of the highest growth rates of electric vehicles in the country. According to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, the number of EVs in the state has risen from about 1,000 to more than 5,000 in the past year.
SIgning up is easy, says ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano. "You go to chargepoint.com, sign up for a ChargePoint account. You'll get a card in the mail, and when you show up at a station with your card, you wave it at the station, it will authorize the session and you just plug the charger in, it's that simple," explains Romano.
Romano says an app will be up to not only let drivers know where charging stations are, but where stations are open or occupied.
