"Thad gives us the best chance. He can extend plays, he can run, he can throw it..now he has an opportunity to show us what he has," Marrone said.
Lewis, 25, a Miami area native out of Duke University was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Lions on Aug. 25, after Manuel underwent surgery on his left knee. Lewis made his only career start last season for the Browns.
Manuel was injured in the third quarter of Buffalo's 37-24 loss at Cleveland on Thursday, when he was hit by Browns safety Tashaun Gipson at the end of a 14-yard run., and Marrone says he is likely to be out for several weeks- although it is too early to determine an exact timetable for Manuel's return.
"What we need right now is for it to calm down, see where we're at," Marrone said at the end of last week. , "see where he's at in probably a week to see how it's progressing, where he is, then get it down in to a little bit more of a window."
In selecting Lewis, the Bills chose not to start undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel, who came in for Manuel during the Browns game. but was ineffective, completing 8 of 20 passes for 80 yards.
"Jeff, we are excited about. He's still developing," Marrone tells WGR Sportsradio 550. "We had a situation where he played very well in the pre-season. We didn't want to put him on the practice squad and lose a good young developing quarterback "
