Van Strikes Amherst Church

Amherst, NY (WBEN) Amherst Police say a painting company van veered off the road Friday morning and struck a church building near a school.

Police say the van veered off Maple Road near Sherbrook for several feet, traveling down the sidewalk before swerving left into traffic and striking a car. The van continued at a high rate of speed on Maple into a driveway for Faith United Church of Christ School. Students were being let out at the time, but no one was hit. Police say the van hit a driveway post, across the front lawn, and hitting the church building before bouncing off and striking a tree.

The driver of the car struck by the van and her son were not hurt. The driver of the van, 31 year old Jeffrey Ebert was taken to ECMC for head injuries.

The cause of the crash in under investigation. Police say damage to the building is pegged at $5,000.
